Microbiological analysis: ensuring quality and health

Importance of microorganisms in food, feed and water

Microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, can significantly affect the quality of food, feed and water. The presence of pathogenic microorganisms can pose serious health risks, as some produce substances that are harmful to humans and animals. Examples include mycotoxins produced by fungi, antibiotic substances and bacterial endotoxins.

Methods for the detection of microorganisms at Biolytix

Biolytix offers various methods for the detection of bacteria and fungi. Traditional cultivation enables us to detect microorganisms within 2-12 days on specific culture media. For faster information on pathogenic organisms (e.g. EHEC, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria), Biolytix can provide the desired information within 24-36 hours using a combined real-time PCR method. This real-time PCR technology is also used to detect viruses such as noroviruses in food, water or stool samples.

Total bacterial count and targeted examinations

Determining the total bacterial count of bacteria, fungi and yeasts provides information about the current bacterial load, hygiene deficiencies and spoilage. In addition, specific tests can be carried out on relevant species or groups of germs, such as Escherichia coli, EHEC, Enterobacteriaceae, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Campylobacter, Enterococci, Staphylococci, Listeria or Legionella.

Identification of microorganisms at Biolytix

Biolytix identifies bacteria, yeasts and fungi using various analytical methods. We develop specific detection or identification methods (species identification) for your individual challenges. Some microorganisms can also cause damage or material destruction in other areas, making measures necessary in museums, libraries or archives in particular.
