A1.3
Microorganisms

Bacteria, fungi and viruses can affect the quality of food and feed as well as water quality in many ways. The presence of pathogenic microorganisms can pose a serious health hazard. Some microorganisms produce substances that are harmful to humans and animals. Examples of these are fungal mycotoxins, antibiotic substances or bacterial endotoxins.

Therefore, for food and feed, as well as their raw materials and additives, the microbiological examination makes sense. The results of the microbiological examination ensure sustainable hygiene and production quality.

However, some of the microorganisms can also cause damage or material destruction in other areas that can make follow-up actions necessary, for example in museums, libraries or archives.

Detection and germ count of microorganisms

The determination of the total germ counts of bacteria, fungi and yeasts provides information about the current germ burden, hygiene deficiencies and spoilage. In addition, it is possible to examine specifically for relevant species or germ groups, depending on the problem, for example, on Escherichia coli, EHEC, Enterobacteriaceae, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Campylobacter, Enterococci, Staphylococci, Listeria or Legionella.

Biolytix offers various methods for the detection of bacteria and fungi: With classical cultivation, microorganisms can be detected on specific nutrient media within 2-12 days, depending on their nature and growth requirements.

If a customer wishes to obtain faster information on pathogenic organisms (for example for EHEC, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria), Biolytix can provide the desired information after 24-36 hours, depending on the problem, using the combined real-time PCR method. We also use real-time PCR technology to detect viruses (e.g., noroviruses in food, water or stool samples).

Identification of microorganisms

Biolytix identifies bacteria, yeasts and fungi using various analytical methods. We specifically develop specific detection or identification procedures (species identification) for your individual problems.
